STAIRS - THE FINAL CHAPTER

While we're on the topic of stairs, we should explore the often neglected use of the space underneath or alongside a staircase. Most people yearn extra space in their homes - it could be right under your feet! Transforming your staircase into a more useful space is simple. Think about what you need most - it could be an office or reading nook, storage area for things like the vacuum or perhaps a bookshelf. Some clever designs even have storage spaces within the actual step! My only tip - keep it simple and uncluttered. The last thing you want to do is detract attention from a gorgeous and expensive staircase.

JAZZ UP YOUR STAIRS

Stairs need to be practical but no one said they need to be boring. They can be expensive to install so people gasp when I suggest that they jazz them up with some paint, tiles or wallpaper. I don't understand why people are so afraid to make small and inexpensive changes to their dating homes - changes that will completely transform how their houses look and feel. Definitely cheaper than ripping out the old and replacing with a new staircase. And what's the point of mummifying our homes so they look the same for decades? Allow your home to evolve with your changing tastes and needs. Have a bit of fun!

STAIRS

Stairs don't always get the attention they require, which is why you might have come across some fairly ordinary examples. So many can look as though the builder was instructed to quickly whip one up with whatever timber he had laying around. Don't even get me started on the ghastly balustrades fitted as an afterthought. Thankfully, though, people are realising that stairs are a key and expensive component of their house design and require a bit more thought. Being such a large fixture, it's important that they make sense within the overall feel of your home - whether it be industrial, minimalist, boho etc. Same goes with the balustrade. Think of it as an opportunity to create a focal point or a little drama (spiral staircases can pretty much cement that one for you!). A simple, understated staircase is also a great choice. But don't fall into the trap of thinking glass balustrades are the least invasive and "disappear" into the background. They really do set the tone for the rest of the house and I think they can look quite harsh, especially when coupled with the shiny silver railings and hardware often used to fix them to the staircase. A simple railing might be a better option. Think about combining interesting textures, such as concrete stairs with matte brass railings. I've enclosed some images to get you thinking. But if you have an existing staircase you're tiring of, stay tuned for my next post where I'll offer up some ideas to spruce them up.

BEDHEADS

I've had some interesting discussions lately with people struggling to find just the right bed. They've been to all the usual suspects - the large furniture chains, homewares and department stores - but can't find what they're after. I'm a firm believer that if you can't find a bed you love, then stick to a mattress and base. Or, think outside the box! A bedhead repurposed from an old gate, fence palings or even pressed metal or wood carve panels can work a treat. Panel your entire wall with recycled timber or if you're crafty, grab some ply, string, tiles, mouldings or whatever else you fancy and start creating. Your imagination is the limit. And best of all, you'll have a unique, kick arse piece.
