CHEVRON - THE "OTHER" HERRINGBONE

Chevron - essentially a zig zag pattern - is often mistaken for herringbone. We've already established the difference between the two patterns (check out my last post). So today I thought we should have a closer look at chevron - a strong trend, which isn't showing signs of fizzling out any time soon. I must admit, I'm tiring a little of the "in your face" chevron patterns on cushions and bed linen that seem to be saturating the market at the moment. But there are still plenty of cool ways to introduce it into your home. I like it best used as a floor or tile pattern but it can also create an interesting pop of pattern as a throw on a simple sofa or you may want to get crafty and create a chevron pattern on an old dresser. I like the idea of painting or wallpapering an entire wall, but perhaps try the zig zag pattern in different thicknesses as a slight variation to the design.

EMERALD GEMS

We are fast approaching the end of the year when we'll find out what the Pantone colour of 2015 will be. We know that 2014 is the year of Radiant Orchid (see previous post on this), but I just can't let go of Pantone Colour for 2013,  Emerald. It's such a vibrant, lush and energetic shade of green that packs a punch and certainly makes a statement. If it were on a school bus, it would sit right at the back. It's that cool! If you're going to have a pop of colour in your home, Emerald is definitely worth serious consideration.

JAZZ UP YOUR STAIRS

Stairs need to be practical but no one said they need to be boring. They can be expensive to install so people gasp when I suggest that they jazz them up with some paint, tiles or wallpaper. I don't understand why people are so afraid to make small and inexpensive changes to their dating homes - changes that will completely transform how their houses look and feel. Definitely cheaper than ripping out the old and replacing with a new staircase. And what's the point of mummifying our homes so they look the same for decades? Allow your home to evolve with your changing tastes and needs. Have a bit of fun!
