METAL FRAMES

I attended Designex in Sydney earlier in the year, where the latest and greatest designs and products for interiors were showcased. I was particularly excited to find a metal fabricating company that makes the most amazing metal doors and windows. Not that chunky, shiny aluminum stuff. I'm talking the thin matte black variety you would normally find in Europe. Don't get me wrong, timber doors and windows are great. But when you see this sort of metal installation (which is quite rare), it will definitely impress. I particularly like it done on a kick arse scale - the taller the better. And this is where you are limited with timber - it can warp when used on a larger scale. Metal can be fabricated to pretty much any size and shape. If you're renovating or building, it's definitely worth checking out.

PRESSED METAL

If you're a fan of reality renovation shows, you'll have noticed a mad love for the good ol' pressed metal or tin. Once found only in period homes, it's become quite the popular finish in any style interior. I'm a big fan. But like with most things, if not used properly it can look ghastly. I'm not particularly fond of the stark silver mirror finish, but when painted, gee it looks damn fine! And if you're really awesome, you'll rust it up and leave it just like that. The beauty of pressed tin is that it is lightweight so can be used just about anywhere. You've probably seen pressed metal ceilings and hallways in period homes (which always excite me). But it also looks amazing as a kitchen splash back or as an entire featured wall. It gives you a great textural finish and you're guaranteed a wow factor. The look is so fabulous, there is even a range of fantastic wallpaper on the market that looks just like the real stuff. Can you pick the wallpaper in the attached images?

COPPER MADNESS

I'm a tad copper crazed. And by that, I mean I have a Single White Female-esque unhealthy obsession with the stuff. I love it in any form and in any finish - shiny or burnished, whatever. Nothing beats it when you're after a super cool "ooh ahh" effect and it provides a warmth and richness that no other material can offer. I'm biased, but it's true. Its uses are honestly endless - I even just recommended it as an exposed curtain rod in lieu of the conventional boring rods out on the market. And best of all, you can get it from your local hardware store. Tom Dixon has been kicking butt with copper over the last few years with the Copper Shade and a whole range of other light fittings and general homeware accessories. Danish designer David Derksen also has a cool range of faceted copper light pendants. But the release of Blue Dot's Copper Real Good Chair has blown my mind! They should've named it the really, REALLY freakin' awesome chair. At the very least, try some "pops" of copper in your home. See how that bedroom (pic enclosed) is lifted by the inclusion of that copper cushion. It really does work magic. Do it, if only just for me.
