STATEMENT LIGHTING

When choosing lights, most people try and blend the fitting in with the room or even make them invisible. That's why so many people choose the dreaded downlight. Don't get me wrong, down lights have their place. But I can't help but feel that people choose them because they are an easy option. One sure way to make a bold and unique statement in an interior is with lighting. I love the idea of using a kick arse light fitting, just as you would a sculptural piece or artwork. Statement lighting can transform the look and feel of a space, providing edge and interest to an otherwise boring room. Don't be afraid to be adventurous with your light fittings. They're there to serve a purpose but they can also be used as a unique decorator piece.

SWINGING CHANDELIERS

Piet Boon lighting

Chandeliers are normally associated with those dramatic crystal-laden pendants you find in ballrooms and manors. They're pretty fabulous - I have one in my bedroom! But the chandelier has taken all sorts of forms, with quirky and edgy designs coming into play. A chandelier really just means a decorative hanging light with branches for several light bulbs. I love the modern take of the chandelier, particularly those that use unexpected materials (check out the bike chain in the attached images). I also like the idea of mixing old with new, such as placing a traditional-looking chandelier in a modern space, or vice-versa. No matter how you choose to use it, one thing's for certain - a chandelier in any form commands attention and will certainly bring a little drama to an otherwise dull space.

TEAL LOVIN'

Feeling blue? Me too. Teal to be exact. It's that tricky balance of blue with just a hint of green that doesn't quite tip it over into the aqua hemisphere. I love the depth and richness of teal and I especially love it in leather and velvet. Aw Ma Gawwwd! It's a great colour for winter and it pairs really well with timbers and warmer Autumnal colours. It's especially good with copper and bronze. I wouldn't hesitate to paint an entire room in the colour. It's that good!
